Why the Sea Changes Colour Throughout the Day

The sea never looks quite the same throughout the day. In the morning, its surface may appear soft and pale blue. As the sun rises higher, the water can take on deeper shades of turquoise and blue, before reflecting warm golden tones as the afternoon slowly turns into evening.
In places like Komodo National Park, where islands, reefs, and open waters meet, these changing colours become part of the beauty of the journey. But what makes the sea look so different from one moment to the next?
1. The Sunlight Shapes What We See
One of the main reasons the sea changes colour is the movement of sunlight throughout the day.
In the early morning and late afternoon, sunlight reaches the water at a lower angle, creating softer light and longer shadows. This can make the sea appear darker, warmer, or more muted in certain areas.
Around midday, when the sun is higher, its light is stronger and more direct. The water may appear brighter, revealing clearer shades of blue and turquoise, especially in shallow areas.
The sea is constantly reflecting and interacting with the changing light above it, giving the same view a different feeling throughout the day.
2. Depth Creates Different Shades of Blue
The depth of the water also plays an important role in its colour.
Shallow areas often appear lighter because sunlight can reach the seafloor and reflect back through the water. Where the bottom is covered with pale sand, the sea may look bright turquoise or light blue.
In deeper areas, less sunlight reaches the seabed, and more light is absorbed as it travels through the water. This often creates darker shades of blue.
As you sail between islands, these changes in depth can create beautiful contrasts, with light turquoise water close to shore and deep blue stretching out towards the horizon.
3. The Seafloor Adds Its Own Colours
Beneath the surface, the seafloor can influence the colour of the water above it.
Pale sand, coral reefs, rocks, and seagrass all reflect light differently. A sandy seabed may give the water a lighter appearance, while areas with darker rocks or deeper coral formations can look more subdued.
In Komodo, where reefs and shallow coastal areas sit alongside deeper channels, the underwater landscape can create a variety of colours within a single view.
What we see from the boat is often a reflection of the world beneath it.
4. Clouds and Weather Change the Mood of the Sea
The sky is another important part of the picture. Clouds can soften or block direct sunlight, changing the way the water reflects light.
On a clear day, the sea may appear bright and vivid. When clouds move overhead, the same area can look darker, cooler, or more subdued.
Weather conditions can also influence the appearance of the water. Wind creates ripples and waves that change how sunlight is reflected, while rain or suspended particles may affect visibility and colour.
These small changes make the sea feel different even when you remain in the same place.
5. Every Hour Brings a Different Perspective
One of the most beautiful parts of being at sea is watching the landscape change without having to move very far.
The morning may bring gentle light and quiet shades of blue. By midday, the colours can become more vivid, while the late afternoon introduces warmer tones and softer contrasts.
As the sun begins to set, the sea may reflect the changing colours of the sky, creating a different atmosphere across the surrounding islands.
Not every change is dramatic, but taking the time to notice them can make the journey feel more meaningful.
Let the Colours Become Part of the Journey
The changing colours of the sea are a reminder that nature is never completely still. Light shifts, clouds move, and the water reflects the landscape and conditions around it in ways that are never exactly repeated.
During a sailing journey through Komodo, these small changes become part of the experience: the turquoise water near a beach, the deep blue of open sea, or the warm light settling over the islands.
