A sailing trip is more than travelling from one island to another. It is an opportunity to spend your days surrounded by the ocean, discover new places, and enjoy activities that make the journey just as exciting as the destinations themselves.

In Labuan Bajo, the sea opens up plenty of possibilities. You can swim in clear waters, snorkel above coral reefs, explore quiet beaches, or simply relax on deck while the boat moves across the islands of Komodo National Park.

Whether you enjoy being active or prefer taking things slowly, there is always something to experience along the way. Here are a few ways to make the most of your time at sea.

1. Jump In and Enjoy the Water

Sometimes, the best way to enjoy the ocean is simply to get into it.

When the boat stops at a suitable swimming spot, take the opportunity to cool off and enjoy the clear water around you. Swimming gives you a different perspective of the surrounding landscape, with the boat, islands, and open sea creating a setting that feels far removed from everyday life.

Always follow the crew's instructions before entering the water, as currents and sea conditions can change from one location to another.

2. Discover What Lies Beneath the Surface

The experience does not end at the water's surface. Snorkelling allows you to discover another side of Komodo, where coral reefs, tropical fish, and other marine life form an underwater world of their own.

You do not need to be an experienced snorkeller to appreciate the scenery beneath the water, although being comfortable in the sea and using the right equipment are important.

Follow local guidance, avoid touching coral, and observe marine animals without chasing or disturbing them. These small actions help keep the underwater environment healthy for future visitors.

3. Explore Beaches and Sandbanks

One of the pleasures of sailing around Komodo is discovering beaches and sandbanks that look different from the open sea.

Places such as Pink Beach and Taka Makassar offer opportunities to enjoy the coastline, take photographs, or spend time in the water when conditions permit. Each stop has its own character, from distinctive pink-toned sand to small stretches of pale sand surrounded by blue water.

Take your time when visiting these places. You do not always need a packed activity schedule to enjoy a destination; sometimes, walking along the shore or sitting by the water is enough.

4. Paddle Your Way Around

If kayaking or paddleboarding is available on your boat, these activities can offer a more relaxed way to explore the water.

Moving at your own pace lets you appreciate the coastline from a different angle. You can take in the surrounding landscape, enjoy the calm moments between activities, and experience the water without rushing from one place to another.

Availability depends on the boat and its facilities, so check what is included in your trip before departure. Always use the required safety equipment and follow the crew's advice about where these activities are suitable.

5. Take a Trek and See the Islands from Above

Not every adventure needs to happen in the water. Some of Komodo's most memorable views can be found on land, particularly from the hills overlooking the surrounding islands.

A trek to viewpoints on places such as Padar Island or Gili Lawa gives you a chance to see the landscape from above. The trails can be steep and exposed to the sun, but the views reveal the curves of the coastline, the rolling hills, and the different shades of blue across the sea.

Wear suitable footwear, bring drinking water, and follow local guidance to make the trek more comfortable.

6. Enjoy the Moments Between Activities

A sailing trip does not have to be filled with activities from morning until night.

Between swimming stops and island visits, you can relax on deck, enjoy a meal, read a book, or simply watch the changing scenery. These quieter moments are part of what makes travelling by boat different from a conventional holiday.

With the ocean around you and the next destination somewhere beyond the horizon, there is room to slow down and enjoy the journey without feeling that every moment needs to be planned.

7. Watch the Sky Change at Sunset

As the day comes to an end, the sea offers a different kind of experience.

Find a comfortable spot on deck and watch the light change across the water as the sun moves towards the horizon. The islands become silhouettes, the colours of the sky gradually shift, and the atmosphere on board often becomes quieter.

There is no need for a special activity or a complicated plan. Sometimes, simply sharing the view with your fellow travellers is enough to make the moment memorable.

Let the Sea Shape Your Adventure

When the sea becomes your playground, the possibilities go beyond swimming and snorkelling. Every stop offers something different, whether it is exploring a beach, trekking to a viewpoint, discovering marine life, or enjoying a quiet moment on board.

The key is to choose activities that suit your interests while remaining flexible enough to respect changing weather and sea conditions.
